“REVER” app review
Today in the series, I tried out REVER.
Check out the video to see how the app works:
First of all, what is it?
REVER is a smartphone app and a website that is designed to track rides or drives in order to share them with other people online. It is a highly rated app in the US iOS app store at 4.6 stars with 5.4k ratings. The app can track your ride, plan rides, help you find rides and more.
First Launch
When you launch the app for the first time, you are greeted with a scrolling set of images of vehicles and a welcome message. You need to agree to the Terms of Service and Privacy Policy to start using the app. If you are already a member, you can also login with the button at the bottom. You are also suddenly shown two popups to allow the app to connect to devices and to allow notifications.
Unfortunately, you can not use the app without logging in. I am not a big fan of that. Signing up is free. The only options are Facebook or Email.
Click on the images to get a full size image. Use the arrows or swipe to go through the images.
Overall Impression
The app is intuitive and easy to understand. The GPS tracking is fast and smooth. The speed actually goes down to zero when you are stopped. There are a lot of excellent functions that seem to be a steal if you have the budget. The map shows most places in Japan with Japanese names so if you do not read Japanese characters, it may be difficult to know where you are.
I give this app 4 out of 5 stars ★★★★☆
Pros:
Great mapping. It zooms in and out to adjust to your ride.
Free account has basic features.
The speedometer actually hits 0 when you stop!!
Allows you to load a gpx file to the map and follow it.
Cons:
Upgrade nagging. All the best options are locked behind a paywall, even finding a gas station.
Requires an account.
Not much in Japan in terms of discoverability.
Conclusion
I think that this is a company that is serious about sharing rides and helping people ride safely. They also make a product called RLink that adds the GPS functionality directly to the bike and provides a lot more security to your machine. I need to try the free trial and test out some of the pro functions in order to get a real idea of whether it is worth it but if you do have the money and you ride a lot, this might be for you.
If you have used REVER, please leave a comment and tell me what you like and do not like about it.
I am, still trying the find the best app for motorcycle riders, so if you have any suggestions, please leave a comment!
